TORY new-boy Darren Gilbert has handed in his resignation amid claims he lied.

Council leaders were probing claims the 22-year-old lied about having cancer.

Mr Gilbert was elected on Thursday to represent Hatfield Central on Welwyn Hatfield Council.

It is alleged he lied to bosses while working for Tesco as a warehouse operative at the Welham Green depot.

Mr Gilbert, of St Lukes Court, Hatfield, declined to comment when approached by the WHT.

Tesco confirmed Darren Gilbert worked for them.

Tory spokesman Benedict McAleenan, said: "As a result of a careful investigation, the Conservatives acted promptly in withdrawing the party whip from the councillor and requested that he stand down from his position.

"He has done so with immediate effect and a by-election is expected as soon as practicable.
