People are being urged to not to go swimming in the lakes at Welwyn Garden City’s Stanborough Park by the Safer Neighbourhood Team.

They warn that river and lake water can contain many hidden dangers under the surface that cannot always been seen before jumping in or the water can be colder than expected.

Occasionally fisherman may accidently lose a hook that could cause injury, and with animals and birds in the water there is a risk of further infection if you swallow the water or have any cuts or grazes that aren’t properly protected.

They posted on their social media: “Whilst we appreciate in the recent hot weather the chance to cool down is tempting, damage is being caused to the wooden jetties used by the fisherman who pay to fish there.”
Swimming is prohibited at Stanborough unless you are doing it as part of the organised open swimming group there.
