Residents had to be evacuated after a broken pipe left hot water gushing through a corridor.

Firefighters were called to Peel Court in Welwyn Garden City, which caters for older people, shortly after 7.20am yesterday.

The broken water pipe was in the ceiling of the ground floor and pulled down the ceiling, along with electrical fixtures.

WGC fire crew commander Bryan Welsh said: “Hot water was pumping out into the corridor. The elderly residents’ little flats off the corridor were getting flooded. We had to isolate the water supply and make it safe. We also evacuated the residents into a different wing.”

Eight rooms were affected and about six were evacuated.

Firefighters had dealt with the incident by 9am.
