Fire crews were sent to Howe Dell Manor Care Home, in Old Rectory Road, following reports of a blaze in a ground floor bedroom.

The ambulance service was also contacted and sent a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance.

One male, who was conscious and alert, was taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage as a precaution.

A fire service spokesman said: “At 9.42pm we received a call reporting a fire in a ground floor bedroom.

“Forty people were rescued from a care home and one person was given first aid by the ambulance service.
