A Welwyn Garden City resident has been left “dumbfounded” after a lamp post was left strewn outside her house for nearly two-and-a-half weeks.

After encountering the unsightly post in Margery Wood around three weeks ago, Diane Croucher rang Welwyn Hatfield Council to report it, but was “shot down” and told to call the county council.

However following a Welwyn Hatfield Times enquiry it emerged the lamp post was Welwyn Hatfield Council’s responsibility, and the mess has since been cleared, however the post has not yet been replaced.

Diane, 53, who is medically retired, said the mix-up left the area looking “like a dump”, and added: “It’s laughable really. It’s a terrible breakdown in communication that’s for sure. I tried to report it but they just didn’t want to know, they literally just passed the buck. It’s very frustrating.”

A borough council spokeswoman said: “On this occasion the trust’s usual protocol was not followed which lead to a delay in clarification of responsibility.

“Once the matter was referred to the council it was ascertained it was the trust’s responsibility to repair.”
