FAMILIES and friends raised almost £500 for charity in memory of loved ones.

The money was raised at a Christmas service of remembrance organised by funeral directors J J Burgess & Sons

It was staged last month in St Etheldreda's Church, Old Hatfield.

A spokeswoman from JJ Burgess said: "It was well represented by many families throughout the Hertfordshire area who they have been called upon to serve over the last 12 months."

The chosen charities were the Mixed Group for the elderly and the Isabel Hospice.

Families and friends donated £1 or more to hang a bauble on a Christmas tree and write a special message to their loved ones, raising £493.27.

JJ Burgess' will donate additional funds,

The firm plans to make this an annual event.
