REIGNING F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has been nominated for a top honour in the 2009 Laureus World Sports Awards.

The 24-year-old Tewin race ace has been shortlisted in the World Sportsman of the Year category.

Also in the running are the fastest man in the world Usain Bolt, tennis ace Rafael Nadal, Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps, Manchester United footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, and motorcycling world champion Valentino Rossi.

The Laureus awards, now in their 10th year, are considered the premier honours in the sporting world.

Organisers have scrapped the usual lavish awards ceremony, considered "inappropriate" in the current global economic downturn.

Winners will instead receive their awards individually at a series of presentations during May and June.
