A BOY thought to be as young as EIGHT was part of a brutal gang attack on two university students.
Waqar Ahmad and Amir Murad were racially abused and set upon by nearly a dozen youths.
They were punched and beaten and Waqar was even assaulted with a sharp metal knuckle duster, leaving him with a smashed jaw and broken cheekbone. The attack took place in the early hours of Saturday, outside the Total garage in Bishops Rise, Hatfield.
Waqar, from Pakistan, is an international business studies student at the University of Hertfordshire. The 22-year-old told the WHT he and his friend had just bought some food at the garage and walked past the gang, who were loitering on the corner.
The youths taunted them and asked them to buy cigarettes.
When they refused, Waqar said one of the gang tried to provoke him, saying 'come and hit me if you can', before they were beaten up.
Waqar received about 10 blows to his head, and the metal weapon pierced his lip and face.
He said: "When I saw my face in the mirror it was horrible. I was bleeding so much.
"I can't tell you how painful it was."
Waqar was taken to the QE2 Hospital for treatment, but released later that day.
Amir, 19, received bruising and swelling to his face.
Waqar said many international students lived in the area and he feared for their safety as gangs of youths often hung around.
He said: "After dark they get drunk and sit in groups. They are always there.
"They gather together and start teasing and abusing us. It's intimidating.
"When they were abusing us I kept asking why.
"We are guests in their country and we are here to get some education, we are not here to fight.
"They should respect people coming from other countries."
* DESCRIPTIONS of three of the main culprits have been released by police.
The young boy is thought to be aged between eight and 10. He is white, of small build and about 4ft.
A second attacker is white, aged 15 to 18, about 5ft 10in tall and of slim build.
He was clean shaven and had a spotty face.
A third suspect is also white, aged 15 to 18 and slim. He was said to be wearing jeans and a T-shirt.
Pc Craig Whitaker said: "This incident has undoubtedly been very distressing for the victims and has left them with some serious injuries.
