An “awe-inspiring” deaf Welwyn Garden City schoolboy made his public-speaking debut at the House of Commons.
Eisa Ishaque, six, spoke to an audience of MPs, hearing experts and other VIPs on his chosen topic of ‘superheroes and how they got their powers’ at the Power of Speech event, organised by the award-winning charity Auditory Verbal UK.
The Power of Speech event challenged common perceptions of what deaf children can achieve with the right support at an early age.
Eisa was among nine deaf children of all ages from across the UK speaking at the unique event that showcased the fantastic communication skills of children who have learnt to listen and speak with specialists at Auditory Verbal UK.
Eisa had meningitis as a small baby which left him profoundly deaf and with sensory processing difficulties.
He began receiving support from Auditory Verbal UK in 2012 and had his bilateral cochlear implant surgery when he was four years old.
He graduated from the programme at Auditory Verbal UK in 2015 and enjoys mainstream primary school and playing with his friends.
