PRINCE William and Kate Middleton have thanked the residents of Welwyn Hatfield for their best wishes on the announcement of their engagement.

Mayor Howard Morgan had written to the betrothed couple following the public announcement of their happy news, wishing them well for their future together.

The mayor has now received a letter written by Jonathan Hellewell, the assistant private secretary to their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

The mayor said it read: “His Royal Highness and Miss Middleton have been overwhelmed by the incredibly kind response following the announcement of their engagement and were immensely touched that you should take the time to write as you did.

“Prince William and Miss Middleton would be grateful if you would please extend their warmest thanks and best wishes to the residents of Welwyn Hatfield.”
