Archant

Pre-schoolers in Welwyn Garden City are showing their sense of community spirit with regular visits to a local residential care home.

Oakview Lodge Care Home has opened its doors to children from the Rowan Tree Day Nursery in an effort to integrate and inspire both age groups.

The pre-schoolers visit the elderly once a month by bus and together take part in activities together such as drawing, building and clay modelling.

Nursery manager Claire Ovenden said; “We really believe the pre-schoolers can learn a lot from the elderly in the community, and vice versa.

“Studies have shown that the presence of children in care homes can improve the physical, social and mental wellbeing of the elderly, whilst the children love forming new friendships with the residents and learning all about their lives.”

Plans for future visits include gardening and games of boules in the summer.
