Potters Bar wife’s gift of life to hubby

A MIRACLE on Baker Street! A Potters Bar man desperately seeking a donor after suffering with kidney disease for 16 years found a compatible match – in the form of his wife.
Baker Street couple Terry and Jo Barnfield are this week recovering at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London, after Jo’s kidney was successfully removed and transplanted to her ill husband Terry.
With many kidney disease sufferers finding it hard to find a perfectly matching donor, the fact that a husband and wife should be compatible is being hailed a “miracle” by close family friend Maxine Payne.
Speaking after Terry and Jo’s operation last Wednesday, a proud Maxine told the Potters Bar Edition: “It is an absolute miracle, to get a married couple to be a perfect match is just a miracle.
“Terry has suffered from kidney disease for years and was on the list to receive a kidney from somebody who passes away and was a match.
“It was only through a routine check up that Jo asked if it was possible she could be a live kidney donor and after being cross-tested the unbelievable news came through that she was a match and could donate one of her kidneys to her husband.”
Terry, 52, was a firefighter based in north London before he had to retire due to his ill health, after 24 years service.
Maxine’s husband Tony is also a firefighter and when the children of the two couples both went to The Wroxham School the families struck up a friendship which has lasted to this day.
Terry and 48-year-old Jo’s children Ryan and Hannah are now 21 and 16 respectively and will be equally as proud as Maxine of their parents who have been together for 27 years.
Berkeley Close resident Maxine continued: “I can’t say enough how proud I am of them both.
“Jo is an amazing woman, very courageous but also very modest.
“Although they don’t like the limelight they both wanted to bring their story to attention just to encourage more people to check if they can be a donor to somebody because you never know who you could be a match for.
“Jo and Terry’s story is truly incredible.”
