Potters Bar's MP has lavished praise on former Home Secretary Amber Rudd after she resigned amid controversy over deportation targets.
Ms Rudd stepped down as a cabinet minister on Sunday after leaked documents revealed that the Home Office had been set targets – despite the Tory MP previously claiming there were none.
It came amid the Windrush scandal, in which some migrants who settled in the UK between the 1940s and 1973 were wrongly being declared illegal immigrants.
Conservative MP for Hertsmere Mr Dowden said: “It is sad that Amber Rudd has decided to resign after she felt she had inadvertently misled the House last week.
“She has been an excellent Home Secretary and should take pride in her achievements in office.”
Ms Rudd was replaced by former Communities Secretary Sajid Javid yesterday (Tuesday).
Regarding Windrush, Mr Dowden said the Prime Minister and Home Office have “rightly apologised for the distress caused to anyone affected and dedicated teams have been set up to help confirm their status in the United Kindom”.
However, he added: “I am equally clear that it is only fair to all British people, including the Windrush generation, that only people with a legal right to be in our country are able to remain here and access our public services.”
