A Potters Bar councillor was congratulated by Prime Minister Theresa May for being the first Indian councillor in Hertsmere.

Abhishek Sachdev, Conservative councillor for Potters Bar Parkfield, met the Prime Minister at a Diwali reception at 10 Downing Street, which welcomed more than 150 key figures across the Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities.

Mrs May congratulated Mr Sachdev for increasing minority representation in the area.

Mr Sachdev said: “It was a pleasure to be invited by the Prime Minister to celebrate Diwali at 10 Downing Street.

“I felt proud and motivated after meeting her, because she congratulated me on being the first elected Indian Councillor in Hertsmere, and that this was positive for encouraging ethnic minority representation.

“She had had a very busy day in the Commons and having had what must have been a challenging meeting with Nicola Sturgeon, I was grateful that she still made time to recognise the importance of this festival to the Hindu community.”
