TWO ponies and a young girl were injured in an attack by a vicious Staffordshire bull terrier.

The attack happened when Emily Wedd, 12, Alice Ipsen, 12, Rhiannon Griffiths, 14, and Vanessa Wedd, 14, went on a horse ride at Mardley Woods, Welwyn, on March 1.

As they approached the car park opposite the woods, they saw two men with five dogs.

One, a white Staffordshire bull terrier, attacked Leo the pony, also biting its rider, Emily.

She fell off the pony which then ran for a mile down Mardley Heath Road, chased by the dog.

The dog then ran back to the group and attacked Rhiannon's pony Connor, leaving it with blood gushing from its leg.

The attack only ended when a passing motorist who saw what was happening drove his car at the dog. As police arrived, a man picked up the animal up and drove off in a van.

Rhiannon's mum Trish Griffiths, of Potters Heath Road, owns all four ponies.

She said: "This dog is going to do this again. It was a frenzied attack. The dog was wild."
