YOUNGSTERS are going to the polls this month – with a record number of candidates vying for their vote. Elections for the Hertfordshire Youth Parliament opened this week.

A total of 41 young people, aged from 11 to 17, are fighting for six MYP seats and six deputy MYP places.

A county council spokesman said the number was almost double those who stood for election in the previous two years.

Candidates on the campaign trail have prepared statements setting out their manifestos, available in video and written format on the county youth website, www.channelmogo.org

Campaign posters are also being displayed in schools.

Cllr Richard Thake, executive member for education and skills, said: “Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) play an important role in representing their peers and making sure that young people’s voices are heard on issues that affect and concern them.

“This year, popular issues include transport costs, bullying and the negative image of young people often portrayed in the media.

“I hope as many young people as possible will vote in these elections as it could start them off on a lifetime of taking part in the democratic election process.”

Everyone aged 11 to 18 in Hertfordshire is eligible to vote in the election, which opened on Monday.

While most voters will be at secondary school, any pupil at primary school who is 11 on or before February 13 will also be able to vote.

Polls close at noon on Friday, February 4.
