Armed police, sniffer dogs and a police helicopter were out last night looking for a wanted man in Welwyn Garden City.

Police were called at 11.14pm yesterday to the Woodhall area, to reports of a man who was acting suspiciously.

Armed officers and dogs attended to trace the man with the support of the helicopter, as inquiries showed he was wanted by police.

After a search of the area, the man was not found.

Sally Timi, of Pollards Close, was disturbed in her sleep by her dog barking after armed police banged on the door.

She described how the police officers ran through her house and into her back garden, looking for a man, and that “the whole street was surrounded with sniffer dogs and armed police”.

She said: “What the hell is our town coming to? It used to be such a peaceful place to live.”

Police are still making inquiries to find the man.
