The police helicopter has been out over Hatfield this afternoon, searching for a shoplifter who pinched a bag from Hatfield House two years ago.

A police spokeswoman told the Welwyn Hatfield Times that the suspect had gone back to the gift shop at Hatfield House today, where he was recognised.

She said: “Police were called at 1.52pm today to reports of a shoplifter who had made off from the gift shop at Hatfield House.”

The man left Hatfield House grounds and is thought to have headed to Malting Mead in Hatfield.

From here, he is believed to have got onto the railway track.

The police spokeswoman said: “It was reported that the suspect, a man, had gained access to the railway track, and the police helicopter was deployed to search for him.

“The police helicopter has searched the tracks, with officers searching the local area, but the man has not been traced at this time.”

The man is described as about 65 years old.

He is white and about 6ft3 with grey hair.

This afternoon he was wearing a dark navy jumper and jeans.
