Archant

An out-of-control teenage gang forced a Welwyn Garden City shop to pull down its shutters and call police at the weekend.

Police were called at 10.50pm on Saturday to reports of youths behaving in an antisocial manner inside and outside the Co-op in Cole Green Lane, Welwyn Garden City.

Disgusted residents took to social media, describing the scene as “absolutely shocking”.

A Herts Police spokeswoman told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “It was reported that they had smashed some bottles inside the store.

“The store had temporarily locked its doors with customers inside.”

The caller told police there were between 10 and 15 youths, aged 15 to 16 years old and wearing tracksuits.

Officers attended and carried out a search of the area.

Two 15-year-old boys from Welwyn Garden City were arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

They were taken home to their parents and spoken to.

They were then subsequently de-arrested.
