Police officers were called to Potters Bar after an 11-year-old girl was asked by a stranger if she wanted a lift.

A police spokeswoman said they were called at 4.31pm yesterday (Wednesday) by a woman who claimed her daughter had been offered a lift by a lady as she waited to cross the road at the junction with Darkes Lane, Mutton Lane and Baker Street, at around 3.30pm.

The woman attempted to engage the girl in conversation and walked with her to Daleside Drive.

She offered the girl a lift but she declined before walking on, the police spokeswoman said.

The woman then got into a silver car on Daleside Drive, which had a man in the driver’s seat, and drove away.

At no point did she try to force the girl into the car and the man did not exit the vehicle at any time.

The woman is described as being aged around 60 and having “blonde-ish” hair, and the Safer Neighbourhood Team has been informed.

The police spokeswoman continued: “The information has been shared with local officers so they can take action if necessary but at this stage we are not formally investigating as no crime has taken place.”
