Police investigating last night’s fatal accident that closed the Hatfield tunnel for four hours yesterday evening have asked for witnesses to come forward.
A woman who was in a green Vauxhall Astra that hit the central reservation after colliding with a silver Landrover Discovery was rushed to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, but doctors were unable to save her.
A man who was also in the Astra in the collision just south of Junction 3 (Galleria/A414) was also taken by ambulance to the Lister Hospital.
The southbound carriageway through the tunnel was closed from just after 6pm to 9.30pm, seriously disrupting traffic in Hatfield.
Sergeant Sam Cordingley said: “I am appealing for anyone with information regarding this collision to get in touch with us, whether they saw the collision its self or either vehicle prior to the collision.”
Anyone with information should call PC Kevin Sloan on 101 quoting the reference ISR 539.
Police have identified the dead woman and have notified her family, but have not disclosed whether she lived locally.
