HEALTH bosses are urging people in Times Territory to join the debate which will ultimately determine how our hospitals will be run.
The East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust - the QE2, Hertford County and Lister hospitals - is applying for Foundation Trust (FT) status.
FTs have been created to transfer power from central government control to community control.
And Welwyn Hatfield people can play an important role.
A key advantage of FT status is that any surplus cash can be spent within our own hospitals and not transferred to a central NHS pot.
A three month public consultation was launched - Your Hospital, Your Care, Your Voice - to get people's views on the proposals before an application for FT status is submitted to the Health Secretary Alan Johnson.
If approved, the trust hopes to achieve FT status this autumn.
While the £280, 000 cost of the consultation - 280,000 explanation documents were sent out to homes across the region - has been criticised by MP Grant Shapps, bosses of the trust say it is essential to get as many people as possible involved.
Chief executive Nick Carver said: "We are extremely keen for residents in Welwyn Hatfield to have a say, especially in the light of the Hatfield superhospital decision."
An FT remains part of the NHS and must meet NHS set standards, but there is a greater freedom as to how these standards are attained.
The consultation will run until May 20. Scheduled public meetings include:
l April 28, 5.30pm to 9.30pm, Campus West, WGC.
l April 24, same times, at Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre on Lytton Way.
