Plans to build up to 1,000 houses on Panshanger Aerodrome were displayed by landowners Mariposa Investments and the Homes and Communities Agency yesterday at the Fairway Tavern in Panshanger Golf Course.

As part of the Local Plan the site off Herns Lane was listed as a “favourable” location by the borough council.

The exhibition detailed plans to move the green belt boundary further north, and proposed to include a new primary school and local centre, which may include some retail.

It also covered the feasibility of retaining the airfield, and listed numerous reasons to justify why the “viability of such a proposal is therefore doubtful”.

They included limited space for development in the south, substantial earth works required to provide a level surface, the need to remove trees and shrubs, and no airfield operators currently willing to provide up-front investment to develop new facilities.

For reaction to the proposals check out next week’s paper, out Wednesday, March 16.
