Residents are lobbying three councils to prevent quarrying and housing development at a country park near Hatfield and preserve it for community use.

The risk of bromote pollution, loss of recreational green belt land and impacts of overdevelopment are among the concerns of almost 900 people who have signed an online petition to protect Ellenbrook Fields, part of the former Hatfield Aerodrome site.

It calls on Hertfordshire, Welwyn Hatfield and St Albans councils to enforce a development agreement made in 2000 to secure the parcel of land for public use and establish a preservation trust to later take over management of it.

The Ellenbrook Area Residents Association petition also asks for the dismissal of proposals for former aerodrome land, including an application to build 1,100 homes as part of a large-scale mixed use development, due to fears of it could release a bromate plume that could contaminate the water supply.
