A petition to reinstate the A&E at the New QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City has received at least 4,559 signatures.

The petition was created by Derek Groom, 70, of Walnut Grove, Welwyn Garden City, and urges East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust to reopen the A&E, which was replaced in October 2014 by the urgent care centre.

It has been signed by Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps, who criticised the “ridiculous” decision to shut the A&E down.

Mr Shapps said: “The 2007 decision to close major services, including the A&E, at our QEII Hospital should never have been taken.

“We warned at the time that the Lister A&E would not be able to cope and this point is being proven time and again with emergency ‘diverts’ being put in place at both Watford General and the Lister.

“As someone who has spent more than a decade fighting that ridiculous decision to close our major services at the QEII, I strongly back Mr Groom’s excellent petition.”
