Pet of the Week: Retired Ex-Battery Digswell hens

The Partington hens.

This week’s winner of Pet of the Week is a family of hens from Digswell who are enjoying their well deserved retirement after spending their lives in cages.

The four rescued ex-battery hens – called Lila, Bianca, Demelza and Angeline – have lived with the Partington family since December, when they were 18 months old.

At that age egg laying hens are considered useless by the egg industry and either get adopted or are slaughtered.

Since 2014, the family have been adopting chickens after wanting to do it for years and adopted the foursome through the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT)

The hens still provide the family with lovely large fresh eggs every morning but are not kept in tiny cages and are free to live out their retirement.

Megan Partington said: “Now we have discovered how adorable chickens are, we wouldn’t be without them.

“They’re so friendly and have their own personalities.

“They’re all so individual and like their own things.

“If you have somewhere safe to keep them I really recommend you do it.

“There are so many out there that need saving before they’re slaughtered.”
