Great value dining at college restaurant
PUBLISHED: 07:00 29 September 2018
Back to school and college this month, so I’d like to focus on the amazing training college for chefs that is right on our doorstep – did you know it was here?
Oaklands has been producing outstanding chefs and hospitality professionals for years, but I wonder if people realise that you can eat at their AA College Rosette award-winning restaurant The Stables?
It is a great value way to dine well, before the chefs leave to work in the UK’s top restaurants.
The Hospitality and Catering students are based at Oaklands College on the Hatfield Road, just 5 minutes drive from Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City, and students enrol from across our area and beyond.
During the week you can book for lunch, with two courses for £8 and three for £10.
The Stables is, as the name suggests, in the converted stables area of the college, and you enter the restaurant through the lovely courtyard.
There is parking nearby.
The students also host monthly evening dinners, which is a chance to really show off what they can do.
Prices range from £15–£25 per person.
The 4th October is Asian cuisine night, 18th October is Saver Night, 25th October Fine Dining, 15th November Steak Night and the 29th November, 6th and 13th December are all Christmas menu.
I have eaten there a few times and I have always been very impressed by the cooking and professional service.

Following from their successful demos at the Welwyn Garden City World Food Festival, the tutors and chefs will be busy at the St Albans Food & Drink Feastival on Sunday 30th September.
At 3.15pm head Chef Martin West will be demonstrating molecular gastronomy at the Cookery Theatre.
Kev Speed, the college’s master butcher, will be doing butchery demonstrations at 1pm and 2pm.
For potential future students, I think the careers talk at 1.15pm in the careers tent will be very useful – there is no charge to attend.
Hospitality and catering is a huge growth area in the UK with plenty of jobs for the qualified, so do go along to find out more.
