NOT being able to recycle tins is about to become a thing of the past across the borough.

Because from Monday, you CAN!

Welwyn Hatfield Council's new mixed can recycling service is being introduced, allowing residents to leave food and drink tins, aerosols and other metal containers outside their homes for collection.

Waste awareness officer Carly Walker said: "Not only does the scheme provide great environmental benefits, but it's easy for residents to do.

"Recycling will benefit the community as it reduces the amount of rubbish we place into landfills and conserves precious raw materials.

"Recycling metal saves at least 75 per cent of the energy needed to make cans from raw materials and helps reduce the air and water pollution needed to create more cans."

Councillor Clare Berry, executive member for environment and community, said: "The introduction of mixed can recycling was a result of residents' feedback highlighting a demand for more items to be collected for recycling.

"We have listened to this feedback and have worked with partners in facilitating the collection mixed cans for recycling.

"We are dedicated to achieving a greener and cleaner borough we can all to be proud of."

To recycle, just place items into your red kerbside box, or if you live in a flat with a mini-recycling centre, in the red wheelie bin provided.

They will then be taken on the same day as your standard refuse collection.
