THE future of Hatfield town centre is back on the agenda following a meeting between council leaders and planning chiefs.

At a private summit between all three Welwyn Hatfield party leaders, developers St Modwen and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), it was agreed a new timetable would be drawn up to get the project moving again.

All agreed the core objectives of the scheme - to build a thriving town centre incorporating business with new housing and leisure facilities - remained the same.

Borough council leader John Dean said: "We have always been committed to the future of Hatfield town centre.

"It is very important the community are kept regularly informed of the future plans and are involved in helping to decide the future of the town centre."

Liberal Democrat leader Tony Skottowe was also positive about the meeting. "It does look as if real progress can be made in getting the high quality and vibrant town centre Hatfield so desperately needs," he said.
