Plans have been submitted for a new bar and restaurant on derelict land near the corner of Bessemer Road and Bridge Road East by brewers Marston’s Inns and Taverns.

The new 689 square metre ale-house would create 20 full-time jobs and 40 part-time roles.

Planning documents submitted to Welwyn Hatfield Council also revealed there will be a 64 space car park created if the proposal is rubber stamped.

The dossier states: “The architectural style adopted for the proposed development derives from historical precedents including the coaching inn, tavern and public house and integrates these with the neo-Georgian architectural style of WGC.

“The materials proposed will provide an attractive statement but also define its nature as a traditional public house.

“The use of windowed elevations will add interest to the building form and help to break up the elevation.”

The proposal falls into borough councillor Malcolm Cowan’s Peartree ward. He who told the WHT he had “some concerns” about the plans.

“Any development on this site would be welcome because it is a very prominent site that has been empty for a very long time,” he said.

“But I don’t think a pub would be a very good idea.

“Bessemer Road is very congested throughout the day and having access near the traffic lights would add to the problem.”
