Another Hatfield councillor has deserted her Conservative colleagues and decided to sit as an independent in future.

Councillor Heather Ciarleglio, who was elected to Hatfield Town Council last year for the Villages ward, has informed town clerk Carrie Lloyd she has relinquished her party affiliation.

She told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “I don’t want other people telling me how to vote or think.

“I was never told how to vote, but you feel obliged to vote a particular way.

“I think the town needs a lot more independents.”

As an independent, she will sit alongside another former Conservative, Councillor Caron Juggins.

Councillor Ciarleglio added: “We are relatively young, and I think it is time for these young women to stand up to the old retired men who have been running the town and borough.”

The authority now has five Tories, eight Labour members, and two independents.
