Councillor James Broach has been elected as the 64th mayor of Hatfield, at Hatfield Town Council's annual meeting yesterday.

The mayor’s election to office follows a long tradition by Hatfield Town Council since its inception in 1894.

James has lived in Hatfield since 2005, and currently works at the University of Hertfordshire.

He has been a Hatfield Town Councillor since 2015, representing Hatfield West Ward, and in addition, Hatfield as a councillor for Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.

Councillor James Broach said: “It is a great honour to be made the Mayor of Hatfield for this coming year, and I am looking forward to working hard to support our community.”

The Mayor has selected The Jamie McVeigh Foundation as his charity for 2017/18.

The aim of the Foundation is to break down the barriers in young men so they know its ok not to be ok.

The Foundation also aims to support young boys and girls from less fortunate backgrounds by enabling their participation in sport through financial bursaries.

Also at the meeting, outgoing mayor, Councillor Linda Mendez presented cheques to her chosen charities for 2016/17 - St John’s Youth Club, and Friendship House.
