A NEW support group for parents with antenatal and postnatal depression has been launched.

Rebecca McCann, a psychotherapist from WGC, founded the Calm Beginnings group in order to help new and expectant parents struggling with the condition.

The workshop is affiliated with the Pandas Foundation - a national organisation providing advice and support on pre and postnatal depression.

Rebecca, a mum-of-two, will hold her first meeting at her home in Dawley, WGC, tomorrow from 11am to 1pm.

She felt inspired to start a support group after suffering postnatal depression herself following the birth of her second daughter Abby, now aged one.

“I got postnatal depression, which is hormonal,” said Rebecca, who also has another daughter, Charlotte, aged five.

“You get to the point when you can’t parent instinctively because you’ve not got any confidence.

“You get stuck in a rut and you don’t want to admit to anyone that you can’t cope, but you can’t cope.

“You end up in this cycle of asking yourself “Why can’t I cope?”

Rebecca took a parenting course and it was only then she realised she was suffering form postnatal depression.

“As I’ve got better and better I thought there was no support groups around here. I thought somebody should start one – so I have,” said Rebecca,

“It’s about working with your emotions and your children’s emotions, and having the confidence to parent instinctively.”

To begin with, Rebecca will host the Calm Beginnings support groups at her home until she finds a suitable WGC location – and wants to hear from any organisations or businesses that have space to offer.

Meanwhile, an alternative Calm Beginnings takes place every Wednesday from 11am to 1pm at Friends Meeting House, Railway Street, Hertford,
