Olympic gold medallist Tim Baillie will officially open Aldi’s new Welwyn Garden City store this week.

The new store will open on Thursday, April 5, at 8am.

The first 30 shoppers to arrive on the morning will each receive a complimentary bag full of fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s Super 6 range, as part of Aldi’s “Get Set to Eat Fresh” initiative.

The aim of the initiative is to encourage children aged five to 14 to develop their understanding and love of fresh, healthy food.

Following the store opening celebrations, Tim, who won gold in the men’s C2 Canoe Slalom event at the 2012 London Olympics, will visit Stanborough Park to talk about the benefits of healthy eating, keeping active and his sporting achievements, as well as presenting the group with a donation of fresh Aldi produce.

Speaking ahead of the opening, Tim said: “I’m really excited to open the new Aldi Welwyn Garden City, I see it as a real honour to cut the ribbon and open the store to the local community.

“I’m lucky enough to be visiting Stanborough Park’s canoe course afterwards too, so we might even find the Canoe Slalom stars of the future!”

The new Bessemer Road store, spanning over 1,254 sqm of retail space, will offer a range of British produce.

Customers can expect to find Aldi’s exclusive Specially Selected range, weekly fresh meat offers, and famous Super 6 fruit and vegetables in-store.

Twice-weekly Specialbuys, available every Thursday and Sunday, will offer budget prices on a wide variety of handy household items from gardening equipment to electrical items.

Forty jobs have been created with the store launch.

Information and applications on all roles at Aldi can be found via www.aldirecruitment.co.uk/stores.

Store Manager Shajahan Miah added: “We’re thrilled to have Tim joining us to help welcome our local community to their new Aldi store.

“We will be offering some fantastic opening week Specialbuys, as well as our everyday amazing prices on fresh, British produce. “We’re all really looking forward to opening our doors to everyone on 5th April.”

The store, located on Bessemer Road, Welwyn Garden City, AL71HH, will be open Monday to Saturday: 8am – 10pm

Sunday: 11am to 5pm
