IN Ayot St Lawrence, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus lays down his sweet head…
Or so the carol almost goes.
For representations of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the three Magi and a variety of animals currently adorn the ruined church in the village.
The candlelit nativity scene, created by villager Sally Trendell and her friends and neighbours, is in aid of the upkeep of the church.
She told the WHT: “Most people who come to Ayot St. Lawrence don’t realise that the costs incurred to maintain the ruins and churchyard are borne entirely by the people of the village.
“Keeping the building safe requires constant maintenance and the trees also need to be checked too – only last week a dangerously leaning ash tree was felled before the winter snow would definitely have brought it down on top of several gravestones.
“So we have now installed a donation box in the church wall and hope that our many visitors may feel like giving a small contribution towards these ongoing costs.”
