Celia Imrie has said she does not want to be defined by her iconic moment on The Celebrity Traitors.

The 74-year-old actress broke wind during a challenge on The Celebrity Traitors, causing laughter among fellow contestants and viewers.

Imrie, who appeared on the first season of the hit BBC reality series alongside Alan Carr, Paloma Faith, and Stephen Fry, told The Times: "I am guilty of doing anything for a laugh, but I didn’t mean to fart.

"I was nervous.

"I can’t believe it became such a huge thing and I don’t want to be defined by it."

Imrie was eliminated in episode eight after being "murdered" by the Traitors, and admitted she was frustrated not to have gone further in the game.

She told The Times: "I was a bit annoyed that I didn’t win The Celebrity Traitors."

Presenter Claudia Winkleman reacted in the moment by asking: "What just happened?"

Imrie replied: "I just farted, Claudia.

"It’s nerves, but I always own up."

TV presenter Clare Balding later called it her favourite part of the show, describing it as "so funny."

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway also shared her reaction on air.

Ms Garraway said: "How could somebody so elegant, so petite, so gracious, let off that huge sound, and it was so nerve-racking in a serious moment."

She continued: "It was my favourite, favourite moment in that cabin, which was deeply unpleasant.

"She’s adorable, we salute you."

Comedian Ed Gamble, who hosts the Traitors Uncloaked podcast, also weighed in on the now-infamous scene.

He told BBC Breakfast: "I’m going to have to say Celia’s fart.

"I know there’s so much more that goes into this show, it’s such an incredible team, it looks beautiful, these huge, sweeping shots of the beautiful Highlands, but there’s nothing funnier than a fart, especially when it comes from a national treasure."

Even Alan Carr, who went on to win the season, mentioned the moment during his Bafta TV Awards speech in May.

After collecting the award for TV memorable moment of the year, Mr Carr said: "Sometimes, when I’m a bit sad, I’ll sit there and remember the laughter.

"You know, I can even still smell Celia’s fart."

She told The Times that actor Richard E. Grant had called her for advice before the launch of the second season.

She said: "Richard rang me up and asked what it was like.
