A curious smell at a neighbourhood shopping centre in Welwyn Garden City has left people scratching their heads and holding their noses.

Since Friday, several residents have called the borough council’s environmental health department about a smell of bleach at the Woodhall Parade shops.

Sally Morley, 40, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times the odour was obvious from her home in Upperfield Road.

She said: “It is getting worse. You can smell it from about a mile away.”

A borough council spokeswoman explained: “The odour is related to work being carried out by council contractors to a flat roof serving a number of shops.

“A specialist roof seal product has been used which gives off an odour until it dries. Today (Tuesday) was the final day the product was applied and no further odour should then be noticeable.”
