WELWYN Hatfield MP Grant Shapps has voiced his concerns over the building of a third runway at Heathrow.

Mr Shapps said he empathised with the cause of Labour backbencher John McDonnell – but did not agree with the Hayes and Harlington MP’s method of protesting.

Earlier this afternoon (Thursday), Mr McDonnell was suspended from the House of Commons for five days, after protesting furiously at the Government’s decision to support the controversial runway.

Mr McDonnell was sanctioned after picking up the mace, a ceremonial club which represents the authority of the Queen vested in Parliament.

Ironically, only yesterday (Wednesday), Mr Shapps had given 130 of his constituents a tour of Parliament, during which he explained some of its many protocols – Including the mace and the red lines drawn on the floor of the Commons chamber.

Mr Shapps told the WHT: “We (the Conservatives) have already said we wouldn’t build a third runway so in that extent we are in agreement,” he said.

He added he had been in a shadow cabinet meeting at the time of Mr McDonnell’s outburst.
