FURTHER snowfall and freezing temperatures overnight has made conditions treacherous going into this morning's (Tuesday) rush hour.

Police are urging people to only venture out on to the roads if their journey is essential.

A spokesman said: "If you do choose to travel, please be aware that road conditions are extremely difficult, please take extra care and allow extra time for your journey.

"Also please ensure you are dressed warmly and take extra provisions with you just in case."

The police's advice was echoed by county councillor Stuart Pile, executive member for highways, transport and rural affairs.

He said: "If you must travel, please stick to main roads as these are more likely to have been salted."

Many schools are expected to remain shut today, while rail operator First Capital Connect continues to run a restricted timetable.
