FURTHER job losses have hit firms across Times Territory as the recession continues to bite.

Tesco, WT Foods and Saab are affected.

And, according to reports, GlaxoSmithKline is set to shed more than 6,000 jobs worldwide.

It is not known if posts at the pharmaceutical giant's base in The Frythe, Welwyn are under threat, before its planned relocation next year.

* Jobs are at risk at WT Foods in WGC. The firm manufactures and distributes speciality food from its base in Bessemer Road.

Michael Ranglin, CEO of Grace Foods UK, said some jobs could be lost at WT Foods in WGC due to a loss in income from the pub and restaurant trade.

However, he stressed that a "period of discussion" was taking place and that the exact number of job losses has not yet confirmed.

He said: "We have been discussing with our staff the need to reduce costs and they are aware that a couple of jobs may go."

* Two members of sales staff from Saab, in WGC, have lost their jobs.

The Squire Furneaux car dealership, based on Brownfields, has also cut costs by moving sales staff to a site in Dunstable.

Service manager Alan Clark said: "The changes will have no effect on the public, as you will still be able to buy a car here and all the after sales team are still here meaning we can still offer parts and body work.

"The showroom is still here.

"Every car manufacturer is having to adapt, as it is a suffering industry, we are trying making sure that this place won't close for a long time."

* As reported on www.whtimes24.co.uk on Monday, Tesco bosses are axing 10 staff at their warehouse in Welham Green.

The full-time positions are likely to be skilled workers who have been asked to take voluntary redundancy.

One worker from the depot at Travellers Lane contacted the WHT and said: "We think this is just the thin end of the wedge."

A Tesco spokesman said: "We regularly review our distribution network to ensure it is able to support our stores in delivering the best possible service for our customers.

"We are planning to create more than 10,000 jobs nationwide through store and distribution centre openings.
