A former video rental store in the heart of Welwyn Garden City could be turned into a Mexican restaurant under plans lodged last week.

Restaurant chain Prezza hopes to open a branch of its Chimichanga eaterie in the Howardsgate store formerly occupied by Blockbuster Video.

The unit has been empty since March last year, and developers said there had been “no serious” interest expressed in opening a new shop there.

A planning document submitted to Welwyn Hatfield Council said: “Chimichanga will significantly contribute to the vitality and viability of Welwyn Garden City through job creation and by bringing a previously vacant unit back into use.

“The proposed improvements to the shopfront are considered to be an improvement on the existing signage associated with the previous occupier.”

And it added: “It is considered that this proposal will ultimately improve the overall quality of the town centre and of the application site and therefore planning permission should be granted.”

Council planners will weigh up whether to grant a change of use from a shop to a restaurant.
