WORLD champion Lewis Hamilton has been awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours list for services to motor racing.

The recognition comes after the 23-year-old from Tewin was crowned the 2008 Formula 1 Drivers' world champion in a dramatic final race of the season in Brazil.

Herts hero Hamilton became the youngest ever winner of the crown after snatching the title on the last corner of the Sao Paulo track.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year runner-up Lewis, who turns 24 next Wednesday, was delighted at his latest gong.

"It is a massive honour and incredible privilege for me to receive an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen," said Lewis.

"It is the most amazing culmination to what has been quite a year for me.
