Welwyn Hatfield Council’s Mandy Perkins has said she is “honoured” after being elected as the leader of the local Conservative Group.

Former leader John Dean stepped down following last week’s elections, after which Cllr Perkins was chosen by her peers to take the reins.

She said: “To be able to lead the Conservatives at such an important time in our borough’s future is a responsibility that I will not take lightly.

“Taking over the mantle from John Dean will not be an easy task and I want to ensure my cabinet and I carry on delivering a responsible approach for all residents of Welwyn Hatfield.”

However, Cllr Perkins also expressed concern at residents’ disillusionment with local politics – reflected in the 34.8 per cent elections turnout.

“What has been made very clear during this local election campaign is that much of the public’s trust in local politics has been eroded,” she said.

“This message has been heard loudly and clearly and that is why I want to bring a new focus on enhancing the council’s communication channels, letting residents know what we have been delivering for them whilst also seeking their opinions on local matters – and importantly – listening to them.”
