His silver Vauxhall Corsa came off the northbound A1081 near the Green Dragon pub, between Barnet and South Mimms, just after 5am.
The man sustained serious head and back injuries and has been taken to the Royal Free Hospital in London.
Police have launched an appeal for witnesses following the crash.
A spokesman said: “Police are appealing in particular to the driver of another vehicle to contact them as they may be able to assist with the investigation.
“No details of this other vehicle are known at present but it is thought that it was travelling in the opposite direction at the time of the collision and that the driver may have witnessed what happened.”
