A MAN is fighting for life in hospital after a multiple car pile-up on the A1(M).

He was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital with life-threatening injuries, following the smash at 8.35am today (Tuesday).

Five cars were involved in the crash - not four as originally thought - on the southbound carriageway between junctions five, at WGC, and four, for the Oldings Roundabout.

All three lanes of the southbound carriageway between junctions four and six, Welwyn, have been closed.
