A MAN wearing a Royal Mail uniform and claiming to be armed stole more than £1,000 from a Welwyn Garden City bookmakers.

The robbery happened at Jennings Racing in Moors Walk on Friday.

A cashier was left “shocked and upset” following the incident, which happened shortly after 9am.

Detectives believe it may be linked to a similar robbery at William Hill in Broxbourne on April 2.

DS Rob Burns, investigating, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “He was wearing a postman’s jacket and had a postman’s bag, but his face was obscured.

“He demanded money, so the cashier handed over the day’s float.”

It is not known whether he was armed, as he claimed to be.

The man is described as being around 5ft 5ins tall, tanned and with black hair.

DS Burns added: “This was a nasty incident which has left the victims shocked and we are determined to arrest the man responsible for this.

“I would urge anyone with any information at all to contact police immediately.”

Anyone with information can contact DS Burns on 101 quoting log 146 of April 2, or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
