TWO young men had an “amazing” escape last night (Monday), when the quad bike they were travelling on span out of control – narrowly avoiding a road sign.

The accident happened just after 7pm on the Great North Road, close to the A1(M) bridge at Welwyn.

A 21-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were travelling on the quad bike when it apparently left the road.

Miraculously, both the passengers and the quad bike managed to squeeze under a motorway road sign, before landing in bushes.

Ambulance crews WGC, Letchworth and Stevenage were called to the scene, and the pair were taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage with minor injuries.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson, who attended the accident, said: “We believe the quad bike was heading towards Welwyn when it left the carriageway. Amazingly the quad and its riders managed to squeeze underneath a motorway road sign on the grass embankment. It then came to rest in dense bushes.”

“Both males last night were very, very lucky indeed.

“The crews at the scene couldn’t believe how the quad and both males managed to escape without any significant injuries when the bike went under the road sign which was only a few feet high.”
