WELWYN cyclist Laura Trott will go for gold at the London 2012 Olympics later this evening (Saturday) after reaching the final of the women’s team pursuit in a world record time.

The Team GB trio of Hertfordshire 20-year-old Trott, Dani King and Joanna Rowsell booked their place in the gold medal race at the Olympic Park Velodrome by beating Canada in their first round heat.

Having broken their own world record in the qualifiers last night (Friday), the terrific GB trio dominated their 3km race against the Canadians, setting yet another world best.

The reigning world champions clocked a time of 3 minutes 14.682 seconds for 12 laps of the track to coast through to the final as overwhelming favourites.

It was the riders’ fifth successive world record at the event.

Five-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy tweeted: “ANOTHER WORLD RECORD!! @JoannaRowsell @DaniKing1 @LauraTrott31 fantastic!!! 3:14!!”

They will now race off against USA for the team pursuit track cycling gold.

The Americans just pipped Australia in their race.

The final is scheduled for around 5.50pm this evening (Saturday).

Bruce Springsteen fan Trott, who started her career with Welwyn Wheelers at the Gosling Sports Park velodrome in Welwyn Garden City, goes in the individual omnium on Monday and Tuesday.
