Last chance to voice opposition to Hatfield incinerator

Time has almost run out for opponents of the proposed Hatfield waste incinerator to add their voices to an official survey of opinion that could kill it off for good.
Although campaigners against the county council’s plan for a huge waste plant hope the inspector who heard a six-week public inquiry last year will rule against it, they have another avenue of attack that closes on Monday, February 17.
The authority’s Waste Site Allocations consultation lists New Barnfield as one of eight possible locations for incinerators or other facilities in Hertfordshire, but also two others in Welwyn Hatfield - Birchall Lane in Cole Green, and Roe Hyde, near the A1(M)/A414 junction.
Cathy Roe of Hatfield Against Incineration said: “New Barnfield is the worst site for an incinerator, but we don’t think there should be an incinerator anywhere in Welwyn Hatfield.”
It is not clear if the council’s waste strategy will be published before the result of the public inquiry, but excluding New Barnfield could influence the inspector against the project.
And even if the controversial plan is defeated this time, Mrs Roe warns it could be revived in future with added force if the strategy supports using the New Barnfield site.
Responses to the consultation can be made online at https://consult.hertsdirect.org/wasteallocations/ by 5pm on Monday.
