Labour has tightened its political grip on Hatfield by winning a town centre by-election, despite a very poor turnout.

Bhumi Zhaveri won yesterday’s by-election in Hatfield Central, increasing the Labour team on Hatfield Town Council to eight, with six Tories and one independent.

She took 490 votes to 353 for Conservative Bukky Olawoyin.

Fewer than one in five potential voters made the trip to either of the two polling stations, reducing turnout to a miserly 17.9 per cent.

The by-election was caused by the death of Councillor Mike Alder on November 10.
